During the 2015-2016 Zika virus (ZIKV) pandemic, it was recognized that ZIKV infections of pregnant women can cause a wide range of congenital malformations summarized as congenital Zika syndrome. In the latest podcast of the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the leading national public health institute of the United States, Professor Jan Felix Drexler presents current research of his group on the interplay of pre-existing dengue immunity and congenital Zika syndrome development. Virologists from Charité Berlin and the Federal University of Bahia discovered that pre-existing dengue virus immunity protects from congenital Zika syndrome than enhancing this syndrome.
